Dryer Vent Cleaning: Lint Fire Demonstration

Dryer vent cleaning is the only way to prevent clothes dryer related fires. The Phoenix Fire Department recently demonstrated how easily the lint in your dryer vent can catch fire.

According to The Consumer Product Safety Commission over 15,000 dryer fires a year are caused by lint build-up in dryer vents. Their studies have shown that 95% of people who keep the lint screen clean still have a large amount of lint in the back of the dryer or in the dryer exhaust duct and dryer vent.

Few people are aware that the lint screen only catches about 60% of lint removed from tumbling laundry. The rest escapes into the dryer chassis, the dryer duct or the near the dryer vent outdoors. Contrary to popular belief, the dryer vent system is not responsible for carrying lint to the outdoors; its main function is to release heat and moisture from your dryer to the outdoors. Only a very small amount of the trapped lint will make it to the outdoors.

As the trapped lint builds up in the dryer vent system, air-flow is restricted, making the dryer work harder to expel heat and moisture to dry your laundry. Eventually, the system overheats, the dryer throws a spark, and the flammable lint is ignited.

Fire officials and dryer manufacturers recommend annual dryer vent cleaning to keep clothes dryers operating safely and efficiently. A poorly vented dryer will cost substantially more to operate. Dryer vent cleaning will prevent fires, reduce energy bills and prolong the life of your clothes dryer.
