Dryer vent cleaning is one of the many maintenance chores often put off or neglected by homeowners. Some claim to be too busy or they do not want to pay for dryer vent cleaning. Others never gave it a thought; out of sight, out of mind. Here are 4 good reasons to clean your dryer vent at least once a year.
Dryer Vent Cleaning prevents Dryer Fires
Your clothes dryer is the most likely appliance to catch on fire. When the dryer vent system becomes clogged with lint build-up, the dryer can overheat and throw a spark. The spark is sucked into the dryer vent system where combustible lint waits to be ignited.
Dryer Vent Cleaning Prevents Appliance Break-down
Many people pay for appliance repair or they are forced to buy a new dryer when they neglect the maintenance. Dryer vent cleaning helps to keep your dryer in top shape while reducing the chance for mechanical failure. Annual dryer vent cleaning and inspections will prolong the life of your dryer.
Dryer Vent Cleaning Promotes Faster Drying Time
A clogged dryer vent will make the dryer labor harder and work slower. Lint build-up in the dryer vent system restricts air flow, reducing the performance of the dryer, causing it to take 2 – 3 cycles to dry each load.
Dryer Vent Cleaning Reduces Energy Bills
By keeping your dryer running cleanly and efficiently, you will be able to speed up the job of drying your clothes, and save a lot of money on utility bills. Your dryer typically costs about $.75 per cycle to operate. A low performing machine that takes 2 or 3 cycles to dry a load of laundry can cost $2.25 per load. Proper maintenance can save you a lot of money in energy costs.
Dryer vent cleaning is very important to reduce energy bills, extend the life of your dryer and most importantly, prevent dryer fires.

Charlotte, NC and www.charlottedryerventlady.com are working to educate consumers as they teach dryer fire safety and promote energy saving practices. Dave Lavalle, owner of Dryer Vent Wizard in Charlotte, NC, is all for The Right to Dry movement that supports consumers who live in areas that prohibit the use of a clothesline.
ReplyDeleteWhy would a dryer vent cleaning company support Right to Dry? Dave Lavalle says, “Laundry detergents and fabric softener sheets are made to smell like the fresh outdoors with names like fresh-air, or clean breeze. Some people like to achieve this naturally, without the chemicals and man-made products.”
When asked if he thought the Right to Dry movement was a threat to his business, Dave replied, “We are not worried about losing business due to people line-drying their laundry. Most people will continue to use their clothes dryers too. We wish to promote all green practices, including line-drying some laundry to reduce the carbon emissions released into the atmosphere.”
Unfortunately, millions of people are denied the right to dry their laundry outside because it is considered to look unattractive to some homeowner associations. Neighbors complain about the view making the area appear to be poverty stricken. They have concerns about property values declining.
Dave Lavalle advises consumers that they can get involved with the Right to Dry movement and encourage their state legislators to introduce a Right to Dry bill. If your dryer is located in a laundry closet or small room, the door to that room must be open while the dryer is running. A dryer needs make-up air--whatever amount of air it's exhausting out, it needs to bring the same amount of air in, without having to work for it.
